Pocket Book Club

Sargent’s Daughters is delighted to announce Pocket Book Club: a new literary programming series that spotlights books handpicked by gallery artists and team members.

Pocket Book Club features primarily shorter texts and will rotate on the basis of exhibitions, with a live discussion for each book at our New York City location.

In our first edition of the Book Club, we will be reading The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector, which is also the title of the current New York exhibition of Kate Barbee’s new paintings.  All are invited to a facilitated discussion with the artist about the literary inspirations behind her work.

The Hour of the Star is a 1977 novella by Ukranian-Brazilian author Clarice Lispector.  The text follows the life of a young typist living in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, whose destitution is placed in contrast to the cosmopolitan city surrounding her. Lispector’s introspective narrative is a patchwork of impressions and reflections, considering the perils of city life, the loss of innocence, and the instability of identity.

The discussion will be hosted by publishing professional, Savannah Daniels, on April 13 at 4:30pm. Please RSVP by clicking the link below.
